One Man’s Trash receives Webby nomination

We’re delighted to share that Great Big Story has been nominated for this year’s Webby Awards!

You might remember our short film, One Man’s Trash, about a unique shop in Alabama that sells unclaimed baggage. It has been selected in the Travel & Lifestyle video category for this year’s awards, with each prize open to a public vote.

You can watch the video below and if you want you can cast your vote here!

The shop was set up in 1970 by Doyle Owens. One day, he was on the phone to a friend working at Trailways Bus Lines and learned that they had more unclaimed bags than they knew what to do with. Borrowing a pick-up truck and $300 from his grandparents, Doyle bought his first load of bags back to Alabama, and the rest is history!

Unclaimed Baggage has remained a family-owned and run business ever since. It even houses a museum for those priceless items that have never made their way back to their owners.

The Webbys are the leading international awards honoring excellence on the internet. Established in 1996 during the Web’s infancy, The Webbys is presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS)—a 3000+ member judging body. Nearly 13,000 entries were received from 70 countries around the world this year.

This is Great Big Story’s first award nomination since the channel was acquired by whynow Media in 2023. The short film, Hollywood’s Horror Chef, also received a Webby Honoree in the awards, something that is granted to only the top 25% of all work entered in the 28th Annual Webby Awards.
