The only thing the Tasmanian devil has in common with its Looney Tunes cartoon character is its temperament. When threatened, these marsupials will growl, lunge and scream like you’ve never heard before; hence the origin of the “devil” in their name. Sadly, a specific cancer of the face has plagued the last wild populations of Tasmanian devils, causing them to starve. Concerted efforts to address this disease have led to some recovery. Can this unique carnivore make a comeback?
