Amami Ōshima, an island off mainland Japan, is well known for its sandy beaches and thriving coral reefs. It’s also home to the country’s largest concentration of dohyōs, or sumo rings. Here, coaches like Jiro Morita of the Sumiyo Sumo Club take great pride in training young people into wrestlers with storied careers—not to mention preserving a centuries-old cultural tradition.
