Making Mammoth Meals with the Zoo Chef
On busy days, a chef may feel like she works in a zoo. For Stacy Kyles, that’s exactly the point. She’s the commissary supervisor in charge of buying and preparing food for animals at the Oakland Zoo, but she’s better known as “the zoo chef.” Every day the zoo serves around 1,000 meals for animals ranging from elephants to ants. It’s an enormous, complex task that happens seven days a week, and Kyles can’t imagine doing anything else.
