Exploring the Unknown Depths of Mexico’s Caves
For thousands of years, caves served as our protection from the wild and unpredictable elements. But in modern times, these deep, subterranean zones hold untold mysteries. It’s precisely that sense of discovering the unknown that gets Carlos Zorrilla going. For the past 10 years, the speleologist, rescuer and river guide has been exploring the many caves of Mexico’s San Luis Potosí state, where he lives. Zorrilla has explored hundreds of caves, many of which house unique plants, animals and trippy geological formations. While Zorrilla has already entered 230 or so of the state’s 460 explored caves, there are many more that remain undiscovered.
