Can This Rare Prairie Chicken Come Back from the Brink?
A century ago, there were a million Attwater’s prairie chickens roaming around the United States. Now, there fewer than 100 left in the wild. These small, critically endangered fowls are native to coastal areas of Texas and Louisiana. Urbanization and other forms of habitat loss have been the major factors in their population decline. But the Houston Zoo started a captive breeding program to help reintroduce these birds back into the wild.
