A Man, A Van, A Plan: Albuquerque’s Fight Against Homelessness
If you see Will Cole driving his van around Albuquerque, say hello—he’s doing good work. Will leads the city’s There’s A Better Way program, which reaches out to the homeless and offers employment for the day at a litter cleanup or city beautification job site. It’s a six-hour shift paid out in cash, and what started as a small ripple has turned into a wave of change. Will has employed hundreds of people who have cleaned up over 120,00 pounds of litter in the past year, and similar programs have sprung up in cities like Chicago and Denver.
